Consequences For Youth Using Cannabis

Legal Issues

Getting caught with cannabis underage can involve fines, public service hours, misdemeanor/felony charges and even possible loss of driver’s license.

Loss of Financial Aid

Even though cannabis is legal for adults 21+ in Maine, it’s still not legal at the federal (United States) level.  Currently, being caught with cannabis underage can result in the loss of federal financial aid for college, including: Perkins Loans, Pell Grants, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, PLUS Loans, and Work-Study Programs.

All minors under the age of 18 are prohibited from working in any occupation in a registered cannabis dispensary, any establishment that cultivates, produces, or sells cannabis or products that contain cannabis, and any non-medical cannabis social clubs.
